Members of Portland-based Cynical Realize Their Shared Musical Goal With Release of First Album PORTLAND, Maine, February 5, 2004—When the first box of CD’s arrived from the CD Replicators this week, it marked the achievement of a long-time, shared musical goal for its members – the recording and releasing of their original material. “We really believe in this collection of songs and our style of music,” said Guitarist/Vocalist Andy Sturtevant. “We only play all-original music so recording an album was the step we needed to take to get our music heard.” The band’s music, which has been described as “classic rock with a good dose of punk,” has been starting to gather support in local clubs. “We’re starting to see a lot of the same faces over again every time we play,” said drummer Chris Corbin. The band’s album, called Workin’ With Wood, was recorded between July and September at The Studio in Portland. It features 10 songs and is available for purchase from the band’s Web site, www.cynicalmusic.net, and from local retailers, including Bull Moose Music. Two members of Cynical, Chris Corbin and Andy Sturtevant, have been playing together since 1998 with the shared goal of releasing an album of their original music. “When we first started jamming, our mindset was to write an album’s worth of songs and go right in the studio to make an album,” said Sturtevant. “It just took us a bit longer than we imagined to realize that goal.” The band broke up in the Fall of 2002, casting further doubt on their future. They reunited in April 2003, and focused their energy on recording. “It was the music that brought us back together’” said bassist Craig Chaisson. “We all believed in the music we’d created and wanted it to be heard.” The band’s first show after reuniting, June 20th at Club H2O in Lewiston, was recorded live and really sparked the band to enter the studio. “We debuted a bunch of songs that night that all turned out excellent,” said guitarist Chris Skehan. “It really made us want to go in the studio to make the album.” Songs from that show can be heard on the band’s Web site, at www.cynicalmusic.net/tunes. About Cynical Cynical was formed in the Fall of 2001 when two former members of the band Flyaway Hair, Chris Corbin and Andy Sturtevant, reunited to continue playing original music in Southern Maine. The two were joined by guitarist Chris Skehan and bassist Craig Chaisson to complete the line-up. The group’s music can be heard on their Web site, www.cynicalmusic.net. # # #
