our demo, The Sincal Demo.  An interview accompanied the article.

Cynical
"No Future" - (4:08)
The Sinical Demo

Hard Rock

From: Portland, Maine
Online MP3s at: www.cynicalmusic.net

Deiter's Thoughts: This song is hard edged with a fast tempo and raw guitars. The rhythm

drives the song as deep vocals weave their way in and out of the music itself. This song

maybe a little dark for the average listener but a fun rock n roll song.

1. What is the bands history? From it's conception/formation all the way through to the present....

Cynical is a band that reunites 2 members (Guitarist Andy Sturtevant & Drummer Chris Corbin) of the trio

Flyaway Hair, playing some of the same original music that band played in the Portland scene in the late

90's. The band has added Chris Skehan on guitar and Craig Chaisson on Bass and is rehearsing to start

playing out this summer.

2. How did you come up with your band name?

The band name Cynical came from the fact that we're trying to play original, hard-rock music to the

non-existent club scene here in Maine. After a couple gigs in front of crowds hollering for us to "Play

some Skynyrd", how could we not be cynical.

3. Who is in the band and what do they play/contribute to the band?

Andy Sturtevant - Guitar, vocals, Chris Corbin - Drums, Chris Skehan - Guitar, Craig Chaisson - Bass

4. Why did you originally get into music?

Music has been a life-long obsession for everyone in the band. I think we all share the feeling that no

matter how bad a day was, after an hour of playing music, our souls are refreshed and we are recharged.

5. Where are you based?

We practice in Gardiner, ME but plan to gig in the Portland clubs.

6. What clubs/halls do you play most often?

We haven't gigged yet, as we are still polishing our material, but we've all played in many bands, at many

different halls throughout Maine.

7. What is your touring radius?

Bangor to Boston

8. What is your current release?

We just cut a 5-song demo to use to promotoe the band and get some bookings. It's called The Sinical

Demo, which is a name we got from our sound engineer who didn't know how to spell Cynical.

9. What are your past releases?

They would all be with previous bands and aren't relevant to this discussion.

10. Do you have a website?

Yes, check us out at www.cynicalmusic.net. There are photos, tunes to download, etc...

11. Can your music be found online? Where?

We're also in the process of building a page on mp3.com, but their staff has been really slow in approving

our page and posting it.

12. What is the song writing process like in the band?

To date, the songs have come about as a result of guitar riffs penned by one of our guitarists. Once the

initial riff has been introduced to everyone, it's a matter of jamming and having eveyone's input on what

the song needs to be properly Cynical.

13. What genre would you say your music is?

Hard rock

14. What are your influences?

We're all in the 26-32 age range, so we grew up listening to classic rock and had to suffer through the

80's hair bands when we were teen-agers. We wear our influences on our sleeves.

15. What notable bands have you worked with?

Andy Sturtevant - Moon Dog Biscuits, Mustard Seed
Chris Corbin - The Soul Merchants, Modus
Chris Skehan - Inner Peace
Craig Chaisson - Idlehead, Cory Melanson Band

16. What local/Indie bands from your area would you recommend to people?

Beef Kurtins - also a hard-rock, original band from Portland. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/294/beefkurtins.html

Keitel - a jam-based band from boston

17. What bands are you listening right now? What are your current favorites?

Our influences vary from member-to-member. Andy is a big Toadies fan and grew-up listening to KISS

and Zeppelin, Chris Skehan is into progressive rock, like Dream Theatre and Joe Satriani, Chris Corbin

is into music played by top-notch drummers, and Craig is into a variety of different styles from bluegrass

to hardcore.

18. What is your favorite recorded song(s)? What is your favorite song(s) to play live?

Our first single is one of the tunes we recently wrote. It's a song called No Future, and it's about

relationships that you know aren't going to go anywhere.

19. What are your live shows like?

To date, it's the 4 of us and our friends, drinking beer and jamming.

20. What is the strangest/wildest memory you have from playing live?

I wouldn't want to publicly announce something like that...

21. Anyone in the band have tattoos? What and where? What's your feelings on tattoos and

piercings?

Yes, our drummer Chris Corbin has several design-like tatoos on his arms. Bassist Craig Chaisson

has then on his arms , back and legs. Tatoos and piercings a good form of self expression, but honestly

a lot of the piercings I've seen lately look like they hurt. It's only skin deep.

22. What are your plans for 2002?

To jam, jam, and jam some more.

23. If you could say something to your fans right now, what would it be?

Check us out - you won't be disappointed.

24. Anything else you would like to add?

Cynical music is for Cynical minds.
