Cynical was formed in the Spring of 2002 when two former members of the band Flyaway Hair, Chris Corbin and Andy Sturtevant, reunited to continue playing original music in Southern Maine. The two were joined by guitarist Chris Skehan and bassist Craig Chaisson to complete the line-up.

The group played a number of shows throughout 2002, including The Somerset County Rock and Blues Festival and Harvestfest, as well as playing at parties and in clubs.

The group broke up in the Fall of 2002, but reunited in the Spring of 2003 with the hopes of realizing their shared musical goals. That goal has been achieved with the completion of their first album, Workin' With Wood. The album was recorded at The Studio in Portland in the Summer and Fall of 2003 and was released in February of 2004. The band broke up for good in the summer of 2004 and all its members can now be found banging away in other bands. When last heard, Craig was playing with Dead Season, and hris was playing with Barry Arvin Young.
